It’s Easy to Find Magic in Key West!
Catching Up in Key West
It’s been a while since my last blog post, but vacation feels like the perfect time to reconnect. One thing I won’t be catching up on? Sleep. There’ll be plenty of time for that once I’m back home.
Key West has a kind of magic that’s hard to explain. The moment I land, my worries melt away. Whether you’re chasing adventure or just want to unwind, this place delivers.
We dropped by The Green Parrot Bar on Route 1, where I performed some close-up magic for a few guests—by invitation, of course.
Street Magic
One of my biggest pet peeves? “Street magicians”—or as I call them, kamikazes. They ambush people on the sidewalk, forcing their tricks on unsuspecting passersby while feeding their own egos.
Maybe I’ve just aged out of that scene. These days, I only perform when invited. Unless I’m hired for walk-around or parlor magic, you won’t catch me doing impromptu shows.
A Chance Meeting
Last night, my wife, daughter, and I had dinner at the Rum Bar. As usual, I was fiddling with a deck of cards. Our waiter noticed and asked if I was practicing my “center deal.” Only a magician—or a gambler—would use that term.
His name is Greg Wythe, originally from San Diego. He trained under the late J.C. Wagner, a legend in the magic world. One of Greg’s most prized possessions is the last deck J.C. used before losing his battle with cancer.
Greg still belongs to The Magic Castle in Hollywood. He used to perform at trade shows until 9/11 changed everything. While the greatest loss was human life, the ripple effects hit every corner of the economy—including entertainment.
You can catch Greg performing on YouTube. Greg Wythe Magic.
That’s all for now…Massachusetts Magician Joe Ferranti
Next time, I’ll be writing from good ol’ Massachusetts—the land of far too many magicians.
